Approach of capacities and scientific education. Contributions for human development
Main Article Content
Abstract
The capabilities approach focuses on the individual and considers that individual opportunities are linked to human development. However, in Latin America, problems with equal opportunities and the disconnection of science from social realities are evident. Therefore, the objective of this review was to describe and analyze the approach of capacities as an alternative foundation of education and scientific culture from the approaches of Amarthya Sen and Mar- tha Nussbaum. This critical review considered statistical data from institutions such as UNDP, RICYT and CONICYT in Chile, together with updated papers. The findings suggest that science and its dynamics are part of a socioccult con- tinuum. Therefore, investment in science and technology does not guarantee bet- ter social indicators. From the capabilities approach, rather than investment, hu- man development demands forms that include socio-economic, cultural and con- textual factors.
